Sodium silicate is a generic name for chemical compounds with the formula Na 2xSi yO 2y+x or (Na 2O) x·(SiO 2) y, such as sodium metasilicate Na 2SiO 3, sodium orthosilicate Na 4SiO 4, and sodium pyrosilicate Na 6Si 2O 7. The anions are often polymeric. These compounds are generally colorless transparent solids or white powders, and soluble in water in various amounts.

Sodium silicate is used as a deflocculant in casting slips helping reduce viscosity and the need for large amounts of water to liquidize the clay body. It is also used to create a crackle effect in pottery, usually wheel-thrown. A vase or bottle is thrown on the wheel, fairly narrow and with thick walls.

Skin: Skin Irritation. Skin exposure may cause irritation, redness, itching, swelling, burning sensation. Eye: Serious Eye Damage. Exposure to eyes may cause irritation and burns to the eye lids, conjunctivitis, corneal edema, and corneal burn.

Ingesting sodium silicate is unlikely; however, if ingested, it is moderately toxic and may cause pain and burns of the esophagus and gastrointestinal tract with vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. There are no known chronic hazards associated with sodium silicates.

Sodium Silicate and Sodium Metasilicate Pentahydrate are used in industries producing several different types of detergent, because of its oil and grease removal and cleaning power, and because it is a buffering agent, helping in soil anti-redeposition and inhibiting process corrosion.

Sodium Silicate 40% is a product commonly called “Water Glass”. This non-hazardous chemical dries to glass like substance. Diluted 4:1 with water it can be used as a concrete sealer among other uses.

Sodium silicate forms glassy, colorless crystals. It is slightly soluble in cold water (22.2 g/100 ml at 25°C), but more so in hot water. It is insoluble in alcohol.

This material will withstand temperatures up to 1,100°C. The main applications of sodium silicate adhesives are in bonding paper and making corrugated boxboard, boxes, and cartons.

Water glass, also called sodium silicate or soluble glass, a compound containing sodium oxide (Na2O) and silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) that forms a glassy solid with the very useful property of being soluble in water.
